On Wednesday, Facebook has announced its plan to initiate a web page that would allow users to examine the Russian propaganda accounts they have liked or followed. This is a reaction to the demands US lawmakers had made to the firm that they should be more responsive about the reach of their accounts.
Recently, there was news surfacing regarding the Russian influence on social media giant, Facebook. The reports confessed that Russia is influencing events in the US by initiating propaganda through fake Facebook accounts.
The Russian influenced ads were spotted by the tech giants like Google and Facebook, who have noticed the displayed ads on their services like Youtube, Google search, and Gmail.
Therefore, the social media firm has announced a new tool for the customers through which they could identify fake Russian account by a sent notification. This will make things more clear and certain. Facebook clarifies in a statement that they will create “a portal to enable people on Facebook to learn which of the Internet Research Agency Facebook Pages or Instagram accounts” they might have followed or liked since January 2015 to August 2017.
“It is important that people understand how foreign actors tried to sow division and mistrust using Facebook before and after the 2016 US election. That’s why as we have discovered information, we have continually come forward to share it publicly and have provided it to congressional investigators.” Facebook mentioned.
However, while talking to CNBC, Arun Sundararajan, a professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business said, “Facebook should let short-term profits take a backseat as it addresses the Russian propaganda scandal.”
In the previous month, social media firm has revealed that the amount of Russian-linked content may have reached to 126 million users on Facebook and 20 million on Instagram, which is more than what was predicted.
